Fact Check
During the investigation DFRAC found that the claim was fake. DFRAC team searched for the text of the headline on Google to investigate the viral news clipping. We found this news on ‘The Janmanch,’ published on April 14, 2018. The article reported a statement from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, quoted by the ‘Indian Express,’ regarding the gang r@pe and murder of an 8-year-old girl in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Furthermore, our team examined the news published in ‘The Indian Express’ on April 14, 2018. Nowhere in this report did Secretary-General Guterres describe India as a country with a “sick mentality.” He referred to the incident of the gang r@pe and murder as “horrific” and expressed hope that the accused would receive appropriate punishment for their crime.
Additionally, we did not find any media report quoting Guterres stating that India is a “slave country” with a “sick mentality.”
