An image of a Coffin carrying the body of CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury with a crowd is making rounds on social media platform X(formerly Twitter). Users are sharing this image and claiming that the late CPI(M) leader was Christian and he had fooled with his Hindu name while being a rice bag all along.
An account with the username Woke flix posted this image and wrote: “Name: Sitaram Yechuri Religion: Christian Imagine how many people he had fooled with his Hindu name while being a rice bag all along”
Fact-Check
To verify the authenticity of the above-shared claim, the DFRAC team reverse-searched this image on google and found some reports from Jargonjosh and Oneindia. As per reports, Yechury was born in a Telugu-speaking Brahmin family.
In addition, we found a news article by Pgurus dated July 17, 2018 with the headline: “CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury offers floral kalash to Goddess Maha Kali!!!.”
The article featured an image showing Sitaram Yechury participated in Bonaalu in Hyderabad on July 15, 2018 by offering floral kalash worshipping Goddess Maha Kali.
Moreover, we discovered an India Today’s report showing the images of late former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his funeral procession. One of the images captioned : “A coffin decorated with flowers and wrapped in the Indian flag carries the body of the late former Prime Minister during his funeral procession”
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s fact-check that that the claim shared with the viral image alleging that late leader was christian is misleading since there is nothing in the picture indicating the religion of the deceased. The mere use of coffin doesn’t confirm religion.
