Old video from Andhra Pradesh misleadingly linked to Manipur Violence. Here's the reality
A distressing video showing a young girl being forcibly groped and assulted by some men has recently emerged on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) with the claim that it is from Manipur Violence where a Hindu is trying to r@pe a university student girl from Christian minority called Kukis in the bush.
An account with the username @lveyutoo111 posted this video and wrote: ” #Manipur Violence in India a Hindu is trying to rape a university student in the Bush. The girl is from a Christian minority called the kukis. This all happens under the supervision of the state government. But the government refrains to take action against such rapists”.
Fact-check
Using keyframes generated from the above-shared video, the DFRAC team found that the video dated back to 2017 & was from Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. We found some media reports (NDTV, The Hindu & Jan Satta) from September 2017 carrying a screenshot from the above-shared video.
As per reports, a 19-year-old college student was groped and assaulted by her boyfriend in a disturbing mobile phone video that the attacker and his two friends allegedly shared on social media. The three young men have been arrested in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district. The incident took place in August, said the police; the men were arrested after the girl’s father filed a complaint.
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC ‘s fact-check that the above-shared video is unrelated to Manipur Violence. Originally, the video was from 2017 and captured the horrible incident that took place in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district
