An image showing some demonstrators in rage has recently emerged on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) with the claim that Protests erupted across Jammu and Kashmir where demonstrators demanding the restoration of statehood, resolution of water crises, and protection of workers’ rights. The image has been shared by a Pak-based handle on X.
Taking to X, Kashmir English posted an image and wrote: “Protests erupted across IIOJK, with demonstrators demanding the restoration of statehood, resolution of water crises, and protection of workers’ rights. Political leaders and activists in Srinagar criticized the Modi regime for delay tactics and disempowering actions”
Fact-Check
To determine the reality of the above-shared image, the DFRAC team reverse-searched this image using Google lens and found that the image was from Jan 2013. We discovered some reports published by Daily Express & Belfast Telegraph in Jan 2013 featuring the same image with the caption: “Supporters of Pakistani Sunni Muslim cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri chant anti-government slogans during a rally”
Based on these reports, the image was taken when Tahir-ul-Qadri, a preacher who used to live in Canada and dramatically entered into Pakistani politics, delivered a speech against govt. corruption and demanding the resignation of the country’s leaders during a rally in Islamabad.
Conclusion
It is evident DFRAC’s fact-check that the above-shared image dates back to 2013. It was captured during Tahir-ul-Qadri’s speech at a rally in Islamabad, not from any protests of Jammu and Kashmir
