On X, a social media user Mossad Commentary shared a photograph on July 09th, 2024, with the caption “Reports of a ship with a US flag targeted in the gulf of Aden.”
Fact Check
DFRAC’s team fact checked the viral post and after investigating various credible sources like RFERL, BBC and other media reports we found that the Iranian Navy’s largest vessel, the Kharg, sank in the Gulf of Oman on June 2, 2021, after catching fire under unknown circumstances. The fire started in the engine room, and despite firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the blaze for 20 hours, the ship was lost. All crew members were safely evacuated. The incident occurred near the Iranian port of Jask, close to the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for a significant portion of the world’s oil supply.
Conclusion
It is clear from DFRAC’s fact check that the social media post claiming a US-flagged ship was targeted in the Gulf of Aden on July 9th, 2024, appears to be unrelated to the verified incident described. The factual information refers to an event that occurred over three years earlier, on June 2, 2021, involving an Iranian Navy vessel in a different body of water.
