The 2024 Indian general election in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in 5 Phases. Amidst this, a claim has gone viral that there has been a low turnout in voting percentage in Kashmir.
A user named Ironclad(@NavCom24) shared a tweet claiming, “According to reports, more than 78% of the Kashmiris did not cast their vote during India’s general election 2024.”
Fact Check
We investigated the viral claim. We checked the Official handle of the office of the Chief Electoral Officer Jammu and Kashmir, where we found that Lok Sabha Elections 2024 in J&K are planned in 5 phases out of which 2 phases have been conducted where Phase 1 accounted for 68.27% and Phase 2 saw 67.22% voting turnout. According to media reports, the Udhampur-Doda Parliamentary constituency recorded a 68.27 percent turnout with 11,07,821 electorates exercising their right to the franchise from among a total of 16,23,195 as the Kathua (SC) Assembly segment recorded the highest 75.44 percent polling while Banihal accounted for lowest percentage of 58.78.
Furthermore, the official account of the Information & PR Department, Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir informed about the voting percentage of Phase 2 voting in Kashmir.
According to a media report by Daily Excelsior also informed, “There were a total of 84,468 potential first-time voters, aged 18-19 years, of which 45,825 were men, 38,641 were women.”
Conclusion
Thus, from the fact check it is clear that the viral claim is misleading. The voting turnout has been successful in both phases of Jammu and Kashmir.
