X user @KavitaWrites posted a video along with a caption that translated to Hindi reads, “Latest news! Video of a British Navy officer beaten by Indian police in Chennai for not paying money goes viral. These people will further tarnish India’s image at the international level.” The video shows a shirtless man seeming to run away from the Indian police, creating a ruckus on the roadside.
Other users were also found who shared the same video with aforementioned claim.
Fact Check
Upon investigation, however, the video was found to be misleading. On checking The Times of India, it was found that it was a drunk sailor of the UK’s Royal Navy creating a ruckus outside a mall in Royapettah on Sunday. The sailor has been identified as J L Willis who is a crew member of one of the two Royal Navy ships that has been anchored at Larsen and Toubro’s shipbuilding facility at Kattupalli near for maintenance.
Conclusion
Therefore, it is confirmed by DFRAC that the viral video showing a British Navy officer being assaulted by the Indian police in Chennai is misleading news, contrary to viral claims.
