Fact Check: Maldivian politician falsely shared France’s photo as that of Maldives

Nisar Ahmed Siddiqui January 8, 2024
maldives fake news

Posts about Lakshadweep and Maldives are being shared extensively on social media. In fact, after PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, the troll army of Maldives made many controversial comments. Maldivian trollers have shared many photos targeting Lakshadweep. Many ministers and leaders of Maldives also jumped into this controversy. After this, the Maldives government has also dismissed 3 ministers.

Meanwhile, the member of the Maldivian political party, Progressive Party of Maldives (@Progresspartymv) Maaiz Mahmood, while describing a sunset photo as being from the Maldives, wrote that this view will not be seen in Lakshadweep. However, later Maaiz Mehmood deleted his tweet.

While replying to Bollywood actor Salman Khan, a Pakistani user named Hamza has described this photo as from the Maldives.

Fact Check

The DFRAC team reverse-searched the viral photo to fact-check it. We found that this photo is of Bora-Bora Island in France.

Many tourist websites have mentioned in the description along with the viral photo that this photo is of Le Moana Resort located on Bora-Bora Island.

Conclusion

DFRAC’s fact check makes it clear that the claims of many users, including Maldivian politician Maize Mahmood, are misleading because the resort whose photo is being said to be from Maldives is actually from Bora-Bora Island in France.

Fact Check: No, Pakistan’s J-10C Did Not Shoot Down an Indian Rafale Over the LoC Dramatic silhouette of a Chinese-made J-10C fighter jet in mid-flight against a vivid sunset sky, with its afterburner trail illuminated in the twilight. The image was featured in a viral social media post by a Pakistani defense account, falsely claiming that the aircraft had successfully shot down an Indian Rafale jet during an aerial encounter over the Line of Control (LoC).
