On social media, a video depicting a vandalized bus being attacked and stoned by a mob is being circulated. The footage shows a group of men vandalising a bus, smashing its windows with large rocks.
Social media users are sharing the video and linking it to the recent Haryana violence. Several users claim it is a waste of taxpayer funds.
The video was shared by Raja Singh stating,” For these, we filed tax returns yesterday”(Translated into English)
The video is also being shared by other users with the same claim about taxpayer money being wasted.
Dr. Prachi Sadhvi also re-tweeted the video in support of the above claim.
Fact Check
The viral video came under our team’s watch. It was determined that the video was taken during a protest in Surat City, Gujarat, in July, 2019.
Through the keyword search on YouTube, it was found that several TV media houses, from Gujarat, had reported and showcased about the incident of mob violence and vandalism which took place in July, 2019, in Surat.
Gujarati media house, ABP Asmita also showcased the news on Youtube mentioning ,” The peaceful demonstration against Mob lynching in Surat of Gujarat suddenly took a violent turn. Mob resorted to stone pelting as a result of which police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. Last month, there was an incident of youth who was mob lynched. A young man was being beaten on the crossroads by crowding the crowd. When the young man was being beaten up, hundreds of people are standing in the village watching the spectacle. This incident took place in Fatepura tehsil of Dahod district.”
Upon closer inspection of the video, the name “Sitlink” appears to be written on the side of the bus.
The keyword search of the word “Sitlink” lead us to a transportation project of the municipal corporation of Surat under the Smart City project.
Conclusion:
It is evident from the fact check that the video is from Surat where miscreants vandalised buses on July 5, 2019. In addition, the bus belongs to the Surat Municipal Corporation. It, therefore, becomes an old update and has nothing to do with social media users’ claims.
