An image of many Indian leaders sitting at a dining table and having a meal is getting viral on social media. Users sharing the picture are claiming it as the picture of independent India’s first government Iftar party which was organized by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, but at the same time was opposed by Sardar Patel.
Sharing the picture a user on Twitter writes, “The first Iftar party in independent India was given by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947, in which his cabinet is visible.
But Sardar Patel had opposed it that it is dangerous for the country to start this wrong tradition whereas a few months back we had not organized any party on Holi or Diwali. (English Translation)
Fact Check:
To investigate the viral claim DFRAC team reverse-searched the image and found it on the Wikimedia Commons page, according to the information on the picture it belongs to the year June 1948.
It was also written that after C. Rajagopalachari was appointed as the first Governor General of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai invited PM Nehru, BR Ambedkar, Maulana Abul Kalam and his other cabinet colleagues for dinner.
On further investigation, we found that in the year 1948, the festival of Eid was celebrated on 7th of August. According to the Islamic calendar, in 1948, the month of Ramadan started on July 8. But since this photo is from June 19 so the viral picture cannot be of the Iftar party.
This image previously got viral with a different claim which was then busted by the DFRAC team.
Conclusion:
The viral picture is not of the first iftar party organized by Nehru, but was organized by Sardar Patel after C. Rajagopalachari was appointed as the first Governor General of India. Hence the claim is fake
