An infographic with the heading AIIMS Report Card is going viral on the social media site. In that infographic, the number of AIIMS is written under the picture of different Prime Ministers. Under our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the name of AIIMS, New Delhi is mentioned. After that zero AIIMSA is mentioned under the names of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
Further, the name of six AIIMS was mentioned under Atal Bihari Vajpayee and 14 AIIMS were mentioned under current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And, then, “we voted for hospitals development! The mandir was a bonus.”
Fact Check
To check the claim DFRAC team searched the AIIMS hospitals in the country. The first was established in 1956 during the time of Jawaharlal Nehru. It was his dream that such a center would set the pace for medical education and research in Southeast Asia.
Further, Vajpayee announced that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, six new hospitals with modern facilities, like those available at AIIMS in Delhi, will be established in backward States in the next three years during the Independence Day speech in 2003. But, soon the government changed at the center and they were established during the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. A response to LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3628 FOR 14.12.2012, Progress under PMSSY Phase-I is given.
A Gazette Notification was issued on 13th August 2013 for the establishment of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Raebareli during the UPA rule.
After PM Narendra Modi’s announcement of AIIMS in Manipur, the total count increased to 24.The total number announced by PM Modi is 16 but most of them are in the construction phase.
According to official data maintained by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in seven phases, the total AIIMS established is 22, of which 6 are fully functional.
Conclusion
Although, maximum number of AIIMS were announced by PM Modi but most of them are in construction state. Six were announced by Vajpayee but they were established during the UPA rule and work on some of them continue even after that. Hence, the infographic shared by Rishi Bagree is misleading as it doesn’t tell the whole story related to establishment, construction and functionality.
