To know the reality of the claim, the DFRAC team did simple keyword research. We found that the numbers provided in the above pictures are misleading. In the picture, it was claimed that “The country slipped from 5th economy to 164th rank.”
According to Wikipedia, India is still the world’s fifth-largest economy by nominal GDP and the third-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on a per capita income basis, India ranked 142nd by GDP (nominal) and 128th by GDP (PPP).
Conclusion
The viral claim that India slipped from World’s 5th economy to the 164th is false.
