Fact Check: Picture claiming to be of first iftar party of Independent India got viral
A picture of Rosa Iftar is going viral on social media. The picture shows India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the first President Rajendra Prasad, the first Law Minister Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and the first Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, including many other great leaders. It can be seen in this picture that all the veteran leaders are having food at the same table in a big hall.
Social media users are claiming that this is a picture of India’s first Iftar party after independence, hosted by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Sharing the picture on Twitter, many users wrote – “Independent India’s first Iftar party”

After a reverse search on Google, this picture, which is going viral on social media, revealed that it is not of the first Iftar party of independent India but of a banquet organized for the cabinet of the Government of India. This banquet was organized to commemorate the appointment of C. Rajagopalachari as Governor General by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
This picture has been shared on the Facebook page of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar on 27 August 2020. According to this post, this banquet was organized to commemorate the appointment of C. Rajagopalachari as Governor General.
This fact check proves that the viral picture is being shared with the wrong context. Hence the claim being made by social media users is misleading.
