Fact check: Did UP Police Lathi-Charge on Students of Allahabad?

Recently, there was a tremendous demonstration in Bihar after the results of railway recruitment. Students protested in many districts by stopping the rail. During this, the police also lathi-charged the students fiercely. At the same time, the flame of this demonstration reached Allahabad in UP. Here also the students demonstrated at many places. The students also tried to stop the train. After which the police lathi-charged the students. During this several videos surfaced, in which it was claimed that the policemen entered the hostel and beaten up the students.

Since the assembly elections are going on in UP, it has become an election issue. People reacted strongly to the lathi charge on the students on different social media. After which many policemen of UP Police were suspended. Although people are expressing their anger by sharing videos and photos of Allahabad lathi-charge on social media.

During this, many such photos are also going viral which are not of Allahabad lathi charge. Those who made these photos viral are targeting Yogi Adityanath. One user wrote – “Thanks to Baba Chief Minister… the children who went to study could return home alive.” Several other users shared the same post with the same caption. Looks like a copy-paste of the photo and caption was going on.

To know the truth of the photo going viral, we did research edge. During this, we found a link to an article published by the news website ‘The Print’ on 20 December 2019. According to this report, this photo was taken during the CAA movement in Lucknow. When the police lathi-charged the agitators.

Conclusion: Our investigation revealed that this photo is not of the lathi-charge on students in Allahabad. This photo is of the lathi charge on the protest against the CAA movement in Lucknow in 2019. Hence the claim being made by social media users is false and misleading.
