A video is going viral on social media showing a crowd dancing on the street with saffron flags, with a mosque visible in the background. Users claim that the video shows Hindus celebrating Holi on Eid on March 21st in Uttam Nagar, Delhi.
Sharing the video, user Vineeta Singh wrote: ‘This is how Uttam Nagar looks on the occasion of Eid! Well done, Hindus of Uttam Nagar!’
At the same time, this video has also been shared by many other users claiming that Holi was celebrated in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, on the day of Eid, which can be seen here and here.
Fact Check:
DFRAC’s team investigated the viral video and found that it is not from Uttam Nagar, Delhi. Instead, it is old footage from a Ganesh festival in the Raichur district of Karnataka. A reverse image search of keyframes from the video led us to an Instagram post uploaded by an account named dj_sonu_gulbarga on September 23, 2024, featuring the same visuals
Additionally, portions of the viral video were found in another video posted on September 19, 2024, by a user named amar_sound_raichur. The caption of that video reads Ganesh Chaturthi 2024, indicating that the footage is from Ganesh festival celebrations.
Upon closely examining the video, we noticed that the mosque visible in the footage has ‘Usmania Masjid’ written on it. A search for this mosque on Google Maps confirmed that Usmania Masjid is located on Teen Khandil Road in Raichur, Karnataka, matching the visuals seen in the viral video.
For further verification, our team contacted the number listed on the amar_sound_raichur Instagram account. The individual, Amar, confirmed after viewing the video that it was indeed recorded in Raichur and denied any connection to Uttam Nagar, Delhi.
Conclusion:
DFRAC’s investigation clearly establishes that the viral video does not show Holi celebrations on Eid in Uttam Nagar, Delhi. The footage dates back to 2024 and originates from Ganesh festival celebrations in Raichur, Karnataka. Therefore, the claim being circulated on social media is misleading.
