Fact Check: old video of Syria falsely shared as a recent incident from Israel.

On social media, video of a funeral procession has gone viral. While sharing the video users wrote “Israel returned the body of the terrorist with explosives. 100s of terrorist supporters eliminated on spot!”.

Moreover, several users shared this video and made similar claims. The link can be seen here, here and here

Fact Check

During the investigation, DFRAC found that claim was false. We found a similar video on the YouTube channel of ‘ShaamNetwork SNN’ uploaded on 30 June,2012 titled “Sham, Rif Dimashq, Zamalka, the moment of the explosion between the mourners”

Link

Furthermore, we also found multiple media report regarding this video. According to ‘latimes’ published on 30 June, 2012 stated “People had gathered to honor a resident of the town near Damascus who had been killed earlier in the day, said Abu Omar, an activist in Zamalka who attended the funeral. The resident, Abdul Hadi Halabi, had been killed by gunfire when government forces briefly entered the town from their checkpoints, said Abu Omar, who requested to be identified by a nickname for his safety”.

Moreover, we found a report from ‘NBC News’ published on 2 July,2012 carrying similar video with the headline “Video shows attack on funeral procession in Syria”.

Conclusion

It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that the viral video is dates back to 2012 from a funeral procession in a Damascus suburb of Syria of a man who was reportedly killed by government forces. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
