Do the remains in viral image belong to Deceased Hezbollah Supremo Nasrallah? Here's the Truth

Lebanon’s Hezbollah group, which has long been backed by Iran, on Saturday confirmed its Supremo Nasrallah’s death after Israel said it had eliminated him in an air strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs. Amid this, an image depicting the remains of a ring is making rounds on social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) with the claim that these remains belong to deceased Hezbollah Supremo Hasan Nasrallah. Numerous users on X have shared the image.

An account with the username @DonKlericuzio posted this image on X and wrote: “The remains of Nasrallah’s ring and note”

Link

Furthermore, the image was shared by many users making similar claims. The link can be viewed here, here and here.

Fact-Check

The DFRAC team fact-checked the above viral image. We reverse-searched this viral image using Google lens and found that the image was available online on a X handle since Jan 5, 2024 with the captions indicating that the remains belonged to Abu Taqwa, Iran-backed militia leader who was killed in an airstrike in Baghdad in month of Jan.

Furthermore, we found that multiple media outlets such as The Guardian, CBS, & AP reported this news. As per reports, a U.S. airstrike on the headquarters of an Iran-backed militia in central Baghdad killed a high-ranking militia commander. The Popular Mobilization Force, or PMF, a coalition of militias, nominally under the control of the Iraqi military, announced in a statement that its deputy head of operations in Baghdad, identified as Abu Taqwa, had been killed “as a result of brutal American aggression.

Conclusion

It is evident from DFRAC’s fact check that the viral image has been misleadingly shared on X. It is an old one from January 5, 2024, and does not show the remains or items belonging to Hassan Nasrallah.
