On social media, a video of assaulting a girl is going viral. While sharing the video users claim that “Another horrific incident is coming to light from Bangladesh. Jihadis are r*ping Hindu women all over Bangladesh. These protests started as “student protests” and have now turned into Hindu genocide”. (English Translation)
Fact Check
On investigation, DFRAC found that this video was from Bengaluru. We found a report from NDTV uploaded on 8 July 2021 stating “A disturbing video of the woman’s assault was circulated on social media where the 22-year-old woman was allegedly gang r*ped. The r*pe survivor was allegedly trafficked from Bangladesh by a network of human traffickers active in her country, Assam, West Bengal, Telangana and Karnataka, three years ago, police said”.
Furthermore, we also found an official tweet from the Bengaluru Police Commissioner done on 8 July 2021 mentioning “Twelve accused are arrested, out of which 11 accused persons & the victim are Bangladeshi nationals. The investigation is complete and a detailed & systemic charge sheet has been submitted to the Hon’ble Court”.
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that this video is from 2021 Bengaluru not from the recent Bangladesh protest, and there is no communal incident. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
