Fact Check: Old video of beating of vice chancellor and police in Gorakhpur University goes viral

On social media, the video of Gorakhpur University went viral. While sharing the video users claim that in Gorakhpur University, the ABVP members first beat up the police inspector and then chased and beat up the university’s vice-chancellor and registrar.

Fact Check

On investigation, DFRAC found a similar video uploaded on YouTube Channel Quint Hindi on 22 July 2023 states “An FIR has been lodged against 22 students for assaulting the Registrar and the police.

Further, it has been told that on 21 July 2023, ABVP workers have been accused of assaulting the VC and the Registrar in the presence of the police in Gorakhpur University. In this assault, along with ABVP workers, the VC and the Registrar, as well as some policemen have also been injured.

This whole matter was related to the suspension of students and the protest of ABVP against the fee hike. Media reports have said that the fees were hiked in Gorakhpur University. After this, ABVP started protesting on this issue.
