Old video of BJP flag burning goes viral claiming as recent Lok Sabha elections

Old video of BJP flag burning goes viral claiming as recent Lok Sabha elections

A video is going viral on social media platform X. In the video, some people are seen burning the BJP flag. Users are sharing this video and claiming that given the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, farmers are angry with the BJP government in Punjab. They have snatched BJP flags from the people attending the rally of BJP and set them on fire.

A user named Vini__007 shared the video and wrote, “Only and only Gunda Gardi. In Punjab, Khalistanis dressed as farmers snatched BJP flags from all the vehicles and people attending the BJP rally and set them on fire. And all this is happening in front of the Punjab Police, but Bhagwant Mann has tied their hands also! Khalistanis in Punjab are also creating obstacles in the election campaign of BJP workers and are not even allowing them to campaign! The hooliganism of Khalistanis is at its peak! In Punjab, only Aam Aadmi Party workers are campaigning independently and they are also getting the support of Khalistanis!!”

Apart from this, many other users have also shared this video with similar claims. Which can be seen by clicking here and here.

Fact Check:

To find the veracity of the claim, DFRAC team performed a reverse image search by converting the viral video into keyframes. We found this video uploaded on the Facebook page named Pawan Duggal (Former MLA, Anupgarh Assembly Constituency) on 8 October 2021. In the video uploaded on the page, the caption “Ellenabad (Haryana) Assembly by-election, this hatred is increasing” is written.

Upon further investigation, we found the same video uploaded on the regional digital news channel Aapni News on October 7, 2021. Its caption read, “Farmers burn BJP flags in Ellenabad, tense atmosphere.”

Moreover, we also found the same video uploaded on the Facebook page Bebak Aawaz, which shows local news based in Rohtak, Haryana, with the date 7 October 2021. The account wrote in its caption, “The condition of BJP in Ellenabad Assembly by-election, farmers burnt BJP flags.”

Conclusion:

It is clear from this fact check of DFRAC that the viral video has been shared with a misleading claim as this video is from Haryana’s Ellenabad Assembly by-election in June 2021.
