The DFRAC team’s investigation found the claim to be misleading. As per Al Jazeera and Reuters, a strained relationship exists between Brazil and Israel, despite their historical ties and a sizable Jewish community in Brazil. Recent tensions arose when President Lula likened Israel’s actions in Gaza to the Holocaust, on 19^th Feb 2024 sparking a diplomatic exchange of ambassador recalls. To which Israel responded by calling Lula’s comment to be antisemitic. Jewish organizations in Brazil have also criticised Lula. While past disagreements have occurred, this incident highlights the ongoing challenges of navigating the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, given the divergent positions held by Brazil and Israel.
