Fact Check: Were There No Deaths In Gujarat In The Third Wave As Claimed By Amit Shah?

Home minister Amit Shah while addressing the public in Gandhinagar praises PM Narendra Modi and Chief of Gujarat Minister Bhupendra Patel. Further, @tv9gujarati posted three minutes and thirty seconds long video of his speech. The caption of the post was, “#COVID19 vaccination drive resulted in less death rate during the third wave, Union Home Minister @AmitShah.” At 1 minute and 34 seconds, he said in Gujarati that During the COVID period, the BJP government of Gujarat has set an example of the vaccination drive in front of all(states) in India, due to this reason when the third wave came, there was no death loss.”

In our fact check analysis we looked for the details from Government’s official sources. The third wave of Covid was from January 4 to February 14. People got affected by it and many lost their lives also.

Cases during this wave peaked during January 18-25, 2022, with the highest number of cases (3.47 lakh) registered on January 20, 2022.

Moreover, the graph which is taken from the official website of https://covid19bharat.org/ shows the deceased in Gujarat due to Covid-19 in the past 90 days. In this period there were 699 deaths in Gujarat. Then, the number of deaths in Gujarat averaged around 17 per day.
