Fact Check:

To investigate the claim made with the viral video, DFRAC searched some keywords related to the claim on Google. During this, we found a report from Live Law dot in. This report stated: “The court described the petition as ‘misleading’ and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the petitioner, which must be deposited with the Tamil Nadu Legal Services Authority within one month.”

Along with this, we found another report from the newspaper Hindustan. The Public Interest Litigation filed by advocate V Venkat Sivakumar also requested the court to direct the Election Commission to present voter list data for all constituencies in machine-readable format before the court and make it publicly available. The petition requested a detailed report of all actions, investigations, audits, and measures taken in response to these allegations. However, the bench of Chief Justice M M Srivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan noted that a petition related to voter lists was pending in the Supreme Court. The High Court dismissed this PIL, saying it was filed only for publicity. The court said the petition has no basis, lacks concrete evidence, and is entirely based on political claims. The court further stated that the petition is vague, contains no concrete details, and cannot be used to compel the Election Commission to issue clarifications.

Conclusion:

DFRAC’s fact check proves that the claim about the Madras High Court imposing a fine of one lakh rupees on Rahul Gandhi is misleading. Because the court did not impose this fine on Rahul Gandhi, but on the petitioner, V Venkat Sivakumar.Retry
