Viral Video of Cash Collection Falsely Linked to Punjab Floods

Fact Check en

The Punjab government on Tuesday declared all 23 districts of the state flood-hit, as heavy rainfall and swollen rivers continued to wreak havoc, leaving 30 people dead so far, and affecting more than 3.5 lakh residents.

A video showing a large amount of cash being poured out of a bag surrounded by Muslims is being shared with the claim that it depicts Muslims donating money for flood relief in Punjab, India.

Multiple other users have also shared a similar claim, which can be viewed here and here.

Fact Check

Upon investigation, we found the claim to be misleading. The video being circulated originated from a YouTube channel named Somoyer Konthosor, a Bangladeshi news outlet, with the description: “Pa/Gala Mosque donation box reopened.” Further verification led us to a report published by Kalerkantho, a Bangladeshi news outlet, which stated that the donation boxes of Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj were reopened today after 130 days. This time, 27 bags of money were recovered from the mosque’s nine donation boxes.

According to locals, each reopening of the mosque’s donation boxes usually yields several crores of taka, which is why people eagerly anticipate the official announcement after the counting process is completed.

Conclusion

The fact check makes it clear that the viral claim is false. The video is not from India but shows a donation box being opened at a mosque in Bangladesh.
