Fact Check
DFRAC team carried out an investigation on the viral post and found that the viral post is MISLEADING. By searching the statement on the internet we found some articles. On 10 July, an article by Reuters with the title of Brazil Lula promises payback to Trump tariffs but leaves diplomacy intact. Zil says that the article also claims that, “We will attempt to negotiate, however, in absence of negotiation the law of reciprocity will be applied” Lula told the Record TV in an interview when he referred to a law recently passed by Congress giving the president the authority to retaliate against trade barriers. Well they will charge us 50, and we will charge them 50.”
Another article posted by ‘AP News’ is titled “Brazil vows retaliatory tariff against US if Trump follows through on 50% import taxes.”
Conclusion
All the facts collected at all the sources confirm that the claim is MISLEADING. Lula of Brazil did not ask BRICS countries to retaliate against Trump with retaliatory tariffs at the news of Trump tariffs. He mentioned they will make an attempt at negotiating. But in the case that no conclusion will be reached then the law of reciprocity will be implemented.
