Fake Claim of Indian under tight scrutiny screening in Iran shared

Fact Check en

Amidst the ongoing Iran and Israel tensions, Pakistani Twitter accounts are starting to spread misinformation. A Pakistan-based account shared a claim,” Iran has ordered a full-scale security screening of Indian citizens upon entering or leaving the country.”

Multiple other accounts were also found sharing a similar claim, which can be viewed here and here.

Fact Check

Upon investigation, we found the claim to be fake. There are no credible reports or official statements from either Iranian authorities or the Indian Embassy, indicating that Iran has imposed targeted or comprehensive security screening on Indian nationals based solely on their nationality.

The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi has issued travel advisories and visa-rule clarifications (like visa-free travel from Feb 2024), but has never mentioned any special screening for Indian nationals.

India’s Operation Sindhu was launched on 18 June 2025 to evacuate its citizens stuck in Iran amid the Israel–Iran war. Over 3,000 Indians were evacuated safely via air and land routes.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran continuously monitored and coordinated safety efforts, including relocating students internally and operating helplines, but without any reference to nationality-based security screenings by Iran. The Iranian Embassy cautioned Indians about fraudulent travel agencies after three Indians went missing, highlighting the investigation of individual cases, not a blanket nationality-based screening policy.

Conclusion

The assertion that Iran has ordered full-scale security screening of Indian citizens is fake. There is no evidence to support it. Iranian authorities have engaged in cooperative evacuation efforts, not restrictive security measures targeting Indians. The embassy’s communications focus on visa policy, safety advisories, and individual investigations, not blanket nationality-based screening.
