A viral claim is being made by some of the netizens on the social media platform X. The claim is that the credit of the recently inaugurated Chenab Bridge does not completely belong to PM Modi, as former PM Singh had contributed more to it.
The user with the username @IndianGems_ claims that PM Singh deserves 80% credit and PM Modi deserves only 20%.
Another account with the username @VrAsokan made a similar claim. It said, “It’s not like Modi came, gave the contract, and the work started.”
Fact Check
After investigating the claim being made, DFRAC found out that it is purely misleading. We conducted thorough research on the same via many published articles, reports and background information available on the web.
A website named ‘Projects Today’ published an article. The article provides details about the Chenab Bridge that was inaugurated by our former PM Singh.
According to the article, the Chenab bridge is located at Akhnoor on the Jammu-Rajouri highway in Jammu & Kashmir. It was inaugurated by Manmohan Singh on 25 April 2008. The bridge that was inaugurated was a different structure altogether. It was a road bridge built for the smooth flow of traffic, including all the heavy vehicles.
It has nothing to do with the recently opened Chenab Rail Bridge. PM Singh was also given due credit for the same back then.
However, the government of PM Singh has no direct role in the successful completion of the Chenab Rail Bridge. In another article on, a website named ‘Railway Technology’. It is mentioned that the Singh government only approved the Chenab Rail Bridge under the Jammu-Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail line (JUSBRL) project. The design they created could not get the approval hence the construction got delayed.
In the governance of the current PM, the construction of the bridge started in 2017, and was completed in 2022.
Conclusion
Hence, after thorough research on the claim and the background check of the Chenab project, the claim is found to be misleading. The Singh government only got the approval for the construction of the Chenab Rail Bridge in 2004.
The actual construction of the bridge started and was completed during the tenure of PM Modi.
So the entire credit for the completion of this Chenab Bridge should be given to the Modi government.
