A video of PM Modi’s speech in Bihar is going viral on the internet. The viral video claims that PM Modi has announced free electricity for UP and Bihar. It has been posted by many users over different social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
An account with the username ‘Azad Bharat’ has reportedly posted the video on Facebook on May 25th.
A similar video was posted on Facebook on the 15th of May by another user, which can be seen in this link.
A video with a similar thumbnail was posted in 2024 also by a Bihari digital news channel. The channel is named Live Cities Media.
Fact Check
To confirm the viral claim, DFRAC conducted an in-depth research of the viral video through Google images and on PM Modi’s official YouTube channel.
It was found out that the viral video is from one of PM Modi’s speeches. That he delivered during the election campaign in Bihar, in May 2024. The video is edited, and only has half of the given statement. PM Modi was talking about his plans to launch the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. The electricity bills will not be zero. Rather, with the use of solar panels, the consumption of electricity will be reduced.
The actual video of the full speech was also posted on PM Modi’s official YouTube channel in May 2024. which can be seen here.
At the time frame of around 28:50, he made the statement, stating (Translated in English) “Modi has decided that your electricity bill will be zero. We have started PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Solar panels will be installed on the rooftops, and you will use that electricity according to your needs for free. The excess electricity will be bought by the government, and you will get paid for it.”
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a government scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024. The scheme aims to provide free electricity in Indian households by giving subsidies to install solar panels on rooftops in every household. The subsidy covers up to 40% of the expenses needed to install the solar panels.
