Fact Check: Did China threaten India to stop Brahmaputra water? Read the reality

Fact Check en Featured Misleading-en

Following tourist killings by terrorists in Pahalgam, India has broken the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. Also, it is being claimed on social media that China may soon plan to stop the flow of the Brahmaputra River from Tibet towards India.
According to Mansoor Ahmed Qureshi on the social site X, China threatens that in case Delhi uses water against Pakistan, China will cut the flow of the Brahmaputra.

There have also been similar claims raised by multiple Pakistani users, who said that they could block the water from the Brahmaputra to aid Pakistan.

Fact Check:

To look into the claim, DFRAC checked official media platforms in China like Xinhua, Global Times, and China Daily. But we did not find any news about this there.
Taking the investigation further, we searched some keywords related to this news on Google and found a report from Pakistani news channel ARY and The Express Tribune. In which, quoting a Chinese scholar, it was written that “a Chinese scholar warned India, ‘Do not use water as a weapon against Pakistan'”

In the news, senior Chinese scholar Victor Gao reacted strongly to the Narendra Modi government’s possible plans to restrict water flow to Pakistan, saying in an Indian television programme, China, as an upstream country, will not remain silent if such measures are taken.

Conclusion:

DFRAC’s fact check clearly shows that the viral claim is misleading. This is not an official statement from China. Rather, this statement is from an independent scholar, Professor Victor Gao, which has been published only by Pakistani media.
