Fact Check: Mob Attack in Bangladesh Falsely Attributed to West Bengal

Siddharth Urmil April 22, 2025
A rape accused beaten by mob in Bangladesh is falsely linked to West Bengal

Claim

A video is going viral on social media that shows an angry mob thrashing a boy. The user who has shared the video has claimed a Hindu boy in West Bengal is beaten to death. A user named पंडित हेतराम विदुआ, or Pandit Hemant Viduaah (@HetramMishra) has shared this is video with a caption which say, क्या आपने देखा, कल पश्चिम बंगाल में एक मासूम हिन्दू बालक को किस क्रूरता से पीट-पीट कर उसकी हत्या कर दी गई? A rough English translation of it say, Have you seen what happened yesterday in West Bengal? An innocent Hindu boy was brutally beaten to death just because he was a Hindu? This is a stain on humanity. If we remain silent now, history will never forgive us. We all need to unite and fight together against this, only then will we feel safe.

A user on X shared a video saying a Hindu is getting beaten up in West Bengal.

Additionally, the reverse search led our team to a news report by Somoy News. The report published on March 19, 2025, has a headline which says, Police car broken into, rape accused kidnapped by mob, mob lynching (translated from Bengali).

The mob snatched the teenager from Police and was beaten up. He was later hospitalized.

When the locals received the information of accused youth to be in their vicinity, hundreds of local residents ambushed the police. They snatched the youth from Police’s custody and started beating him.
