Fact Check: Violent explosion from Malaysia falsely linked to Manipur

Claim

A video is getting viral on social media which shows a massive explosion. The user has claimed that the Kuki rebels have launched a deadly attack on an Indian Army Brigade Headquarters in Manipur using a truck packed with explosives.

The Claimant has further informed about the multiple casualties among the Indian soldiers stationed at the army base. The post ends with text, “Manipuri plunges deeper into civil war.”

Fact Check

To investigate the viral claim, the DFRAC conducted a reverse image search of a keyframe from the viral video. This led us to a video on YouTube, titled, “Massive gas pipeline explosion in Malaysia’s Putra Heights makes mushroom cloud”. This video was published on 1 April 2025.

In addition, the description of the video informs of a significant explosion hot the Putra Heights, Malaysia due to a fire in a gas pipeline, leading to immediate evacuations from nearby residential areas. This incident created a towering blaze visible from kilometers away.

Moreover, to know more, we did a keyword search with related words. This led us to news report by Hindustan Times. The report, dated 1 April 2025, stated a massive gas pipeline explosion broke out in Malaysia’s Putra Heights which made ‘mushroom cloud’.

Furthermore, the report informed about a fire that broke out inside a gas pipeline in Putra Heights of Selangor state near Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur on 1 April 2025. The authorities ordered evacuations from nearby residential areas. The blaze near a gas station in Putra Heights in Selangor state was visible from kilometers away.

Another news report by The Star, reported about the blazing fire that broke out in a neighborhood of Putra Heights. This report informed about the incident. There were no fatalities reported.

Additionally, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department informed that 148 cars and 11 motorcycles were damaged as of 3:40pm, 1 April 2025. The blaze was completely extinguished at 3:45pm, when the gas ran out.

Therefore, the DFRAC’s fact check proves that the viral video is misleading. The reason behind this is the explosive occurred in Malaysia’s Putra Heights. Furthermore, it has no relation with Manipur and any violent attack. As this fire broke out due to a explosion in gas pipeline in Putra Heights of Selangor state, Malaysia.
