Debunking the Misinformation of Jaffer Train Hijack with respect to India

Debunking the Misinformation of Jaffer Train Hijack with respect to India

The Jaffer Express, a passenger train travelling from Quetta to Peshwar and carrying around 380 passengers, was hijacked by BLA separatists and hostaging several passengers. It prompted a rescue operation by Pakistan forces, eventually releasing more than 300 passengers and eliminating the insurgents. As per recent updates, CTD has arrested four suspects in this case. Amid this, a Pakistan-based journalist turned active on X and shared some images of an Indian diplomat, claiming that he has been proven to be behind the Jaffer Express Train Hijack tragedy!

An account named Sadia Khalid (anchor and journalist as per X’s bio) posted some images and wrote a brief note in Urdu, on X, citing that Indian RAW Agent Ajit John Joshua has been proven to be behind the Jaffer Express tragedy. Quoting Open Source Intelligence, a former officer of the Indian intelligence agency RAW and known as an ambassador, is currently planning terrorism in Balochistan from a country near Pakistan.

A social media post by Sadia Khalid in Urdu claims that India's intelligence agency RAW was allegedly involved in the Jaffer Express hijacking incident. The tweet includes hashtags such as #BreakingNews, #RAW, and #Indian. The post references an English news source revealing alleged links between RAW and certain separatist elements. It further accuses India of orchestrating instability in Pakistan and supporting separatist movements like Balochistan. The attached images show Agith John Joshua, an Indian diplomat, alongside other individuals. The post appears to push a narrative linking India to internal disturbances in Pakistan, though it lacks credible evidence.

Fact-check

The DFRAC team investigated this post and found it to be false.

Firstly, we conducted a Google keyword search in this regard and found that no reports have come to light mentioning the name of Ajit John Joshua behind this incident.

Investigating further, we came across Ajit John Joshua X’s handle, revealing that he is not an Indian RAW agent as claimed in the viral post, but an IFS officer.

Ajith John Joshua's Twitter (X) profile features his official designation as an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer with the Government of India. His bio states that his tweets are personal and retweets do not imply endorsement. The profile header image shows him attending the "Colors of India Festival," an event promoting Indian culture, with banners displaying both English and Chinese text. His location is set as New Delhi, India, and his account has been active since June 2010. The profile has 904 followings and 1,517 followers. His profile picture displays him in an outdoor setting, wearing a winter jacket.

Furthermore, we found his image on the Facebook page named Unofficial: Diplomats of India. The image was posted in November 2017 with the caption: “Shri Ajith John Joshua (IFS:2014), Under Secretary (CADRE, CCP, PA-111 & Transport) at MEA, New Delhi”.

A Facebook post from the page "Unofficial: Diplomats of India," dated November 17, 2021, mentions Shri Ajith John Joshua (IFS:2014) as the Under Secretary (CADRE, CCP, PA-111 & Transport) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi, in the Administration Division. The post includes an image of Ajith John Joshua superimposed onto a background featuring a nighttime fountain show with vibrant purple and blue lights, and a historic pagoda-style structure illuminated in the distance.

Lastly, we stumbled upon his LinkedIn profile, citing that he has been serving as the Consulate General of India in Hong Kong. Moreover, he joined the civil services in 2014.

A LinkedIn profile screenshot of a professional named Ajith John Joshua. The profile features a circular profile picture in the top left corner, displaying a bearded man wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and a patterned tie, sitting in an office environment with a ceiling vent visible in the background. The cover image consists of a blue digital network design with interconnected nodes. The profile details indicate that Ajith John Joshua is based in India and has 483 followers along with 459 connections. His current affiliation is with the Consulate General of India, and his educational background is from the National Institute of Technology Calicut. There is a 'Contact Info' link, and an option to see mutual connections is also present. The design and layout follow LinkedIn's standard profile format, with a minimalist and professional aesthetic.

As per the information given on the website of Passport Seva website, Shri Ajith John Joshua serves as the Regional Passport Officer (RPO) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Apparently, there were no sources available asserting that he is an Indian RAW agent as claimed in the above shared post.

Conclusion

It is clear from DFRAC’s fact-check that the post made by a Pakistani journalist claiming that Indian RAW Agent Ajit John Joshua has been proven to be behind the Jaffer Express Train Hijack tragedy is completely fake and fabricated, since no pieces of evidence are available online in this regard. It seems that pictures of an IFS officer have been taken from his social media handles and falsely associated with this tragedy.
