Fact Check: False claim of arrests of Kashmiri Youth in Bandipore goes viral

Pakistani-based accounts have allegedly claimed that “two innocent Kashmiri youth were arrested during a so-called search operation in Bandipora Hajin Road area.”

The claim has been shared by an X user named Kashmir English, who has been found to be a frequent news peddler by the DFRAC Team.

Screenshot of a tweet from the verified account 'Kashmir English' (@KashmirEng), posted on March 13, 2025, at 2:44 PM. The tweet alleges that Indian occupational forces continue their state terrorism and claims that two innocent Kashmiri youth were arrested during a so-called search operation in Bandipora’s Hajin Road area. The tweet includes hashtags #FreeKashmir and #IndianTerrorism. Below the text, there is an image of three Indian soldiers dressed in camouflage uniforms and helmets, standing against a stone wall, with a woman in a red headscarf walking past them. Fact Check

Upon investigation, we found this claim to be false.

A tweet from the official account of Chinar Corps, Indian Army, clarified that On March 12, 2025, based on specific intelligence input, the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF conducted a joint search operation at Gandbal-Hajin Road, Bandipora. During the search, two suspected individuals were apprehended along with the recovery of 01xPistol, 01xPistol Magazine, 02xHand Grenades, 01xAK Magazine, ammunition & other war-like stores.

Additionally, reports from The Hindu and Rising Kashmir dated 13 March 2025 confirmed that Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with security forces, have arrested 02 terrorist associates from the Hajin area of Bandipora district and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession.

A fact-check comparison image showing reports from two news sources, 'Rising Kashmir' and 'The Hindu,' regarding the arrest of two terror associates in Bandipora, Jammu and Kashmir. The left side displays a screenshot from 'Rising Kashmir' with a headline stating 'Two terrorist associates arrested in Bandipora; Arms & ammunition recovered: Police.' It includes a photo of a person in handcuffs and mentions that the suspects, Naseer Ahmad Parray and Mudasir Ahmar Parray, were caught with arms and ammunition at a security checkpoint in Gandbal-Hajin Road. The right side shows a similar report from 'The Hindu' with the headline 'Two terror associates held in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora,' confirming the arrests and the security operation. The image highlights identical details from both reports, verifying the claim. The 'DFRAC' logo is present in the top right corner, indicating the fact-checking source.

Conclusion

Thus, from the fact check, it is clear that the viral claim that “innocent Kashmiri youth were arrested” is misleading. In reality, the arrested individuals were identified as terrorists, not Kashmiri Youth.
