Claim

The National Capital Territory of Delhi went to poll on 5 February 2025 and on 8 February 2025 the result was declared. BJP won the polls in Delhi and is returning to power in Delhi after a long gap of 27 years.

Users on social media are spreading misleading and false claims in this background.

Amid this backdrop, some users on social media are stoking apprehension in the minds of the citizens of Delhi and those who are a regular commuter of the Delhi Metro.

One such user on X, has posted: “Troubles has started for Delhi as BJP has increased the fares of Delhi Metro. New gifts from the new government.”

Fact Check

To investigate the claims made on the viral post, DFRAC conducted a reverse image search. The photo used by the social media user in his post is an old image from a 2017 report by NBT (Navbharat Times).

Link

This 2017 report by NBT discusses the fare hike of Delhi Metro in that year. However, it is outdated and has no connection to the 2025 fares following BJP’s election victory in Delhi.

To further the investigation, the DFRAC checked Delhi Metro’s official Twitter (now X) handle. A post made on February 12, 2025 clarifying that the viral claims on social media have no merit in them. The post, also, informed us about an independent Fare Fixation Committee which has the power to revise the fares of Delhi Metro. It further informed that this committee is constituted by the Delhi government and presently no such committee is constituted under the recently elected BJP government in Delhi.

While inquiring the DFRAC got to know about the Fare Fixation Committee which fix the fare for travelling of passenger from one station to the other. The chapter VII of The Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002 deals with the fare fixation, from sections 33 to 37. Section 34 of this Act deals with the constitution of a Fare Fixation Committee for the carriage of passengers, this committee has a Chairperson and two other members, A sitting or a former Judge of a High Court can chair the Committee, Central and State government can nominate each member for the Committee, A sitting Judge of a High Court shall be appointed after consultation with the Chief Justice of that High Court.

Link

Sections 37 says that the recommendations made by the committee shall be a binding on the metro administration.

Link

Last such Committee was constituted in the year 2016. It was the fourth Fare Fixation Committee. The committee’s report said that the fares will be implemented in two phases. First phase to be implemented from 1st October 2016 and Second phase to be implemented by 1st October 2017. The Committee also recommended discounts on Smart Card users during the off-peak hours and reduced fares structure in each slab for travel undertaken on Sundays and three National Holidays.

Conclusion

Therefore, it is clear by DFRAC’s fact check that the claims made by the user are misleading, as the post featured an image from 2017 report on the then fare revision of the Delhi Metro. The last Fare Fixation Committee was constituted in the year 2016. After that no such committee has been constituted and no new recommendation have been made to revise the existing fare of the Delhi Metro.
