On social media, a screenshot of an article from The Times of India has gone viral. The headline of the article reads, “WATCH: South Korean YouTuber, harassed in Mumbai, meets two ‘Indian heroes’ who rescue her only to end up getting raped by them.” While sharing the screenshot, users write, “Never trust anyone.”
Fact Check
During the investigation, DFRAC found the claim to be false. We did not find any such report from The Times of India. In fact, we found multiple reports regarding the South Korean YouTuber. According to a Times Now report published on December 3, 2022, “South Korean YouTuber Hyojeong Park had lunch with the two ‘Indian heroes’ who saved her when two men harassed her in Mumbai. Park thanked Atharva Tikkha and Aditya, who helped her amplify the incident to get the accused men arrested.”
Furthermore, we also found a report from The Tribune published on December 3, 2022, stating, “South Korean YouTuber Hyojeong Park has expressed her gratitude towards two young men who helped her out and ‘saved her on the street’ and had lunch with them.”
Moreover, we found a tweet from the official X handle of South Korean YouTuber ‘Mhyochi’ dated on December 2, 2022, with the caption: “Lunch with two Indian gentlemen who helped me post the video and saved me on the street: Aditya & Atharva.”
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s fact check that the screenshot of an article from The Times of India was doctored, and the headline was manipulated. Therefore, the claim made by social media users is misleading.
