A purported video of an accident involving the Vande Bharat train in Chennai, India, is being shared across social media platforms with the caption: “Vande Bharat Express accident happened in Chennai. 2:00 AM Vande Bharat”.
Many other users also shared the claim which can be viewed here, and here.
Fact Check
DFRAC team investigated the viral video and found the claim to be false, as no such accident from Vande Bharat has been reported from Chennai recently.
The video was further analyzed through reverse image search by using keyframes from the viral video and it was found that the accident didn’t take place in Chennai but rather in Chile dating back to June 20, 2024. We found a media report from Amazonia Press Editorial Team published in 2020 stating that two died in an accident which happened in Chile.
Reuters, also published a report on the same incident, with the headline “ Two killed, nine injured as Chilean train on test run collides with cargo train”.
Furthermore, we found the original video of the accident posted on YouTube by the Associated Press which stated that the incident was from Chile killing two people.
We also couldn’t find any tweet or post from the Ministry of railways, debunking the claim.
Conclusion
The video in question falsely depicts the accident in Chennai. DFRAC found that the accident was from Chile, not at Vande Bharat, in Chennai. Thus, we conclude the claim is misleading.
