False Claim of Failed Hypersonic Missile Test in Odisha Leading to Casualties

Aayushi Rana November 18, 2024
False Claim of Failed Hypersonic Missile Test in Odisha Leading to Casualties

Social users have shared a claim regarding recent tests conducted by DRDO in India. Pakistan-based accounts have shared the claim that the recent India’s hypersonic missile test has failed, with the missile landing near a city in Odisha. 14 people were killed, and 100 were injured.

Multiple Pak-based accounts shared this claim among which many are identified as frequent fake news peddlers under DFRAC regular investigations. A user named Tactical Tribune wrote,” 1ndia tested its hypersonic missile, but couldn’t hit the target accurately, due to which 1ndian authorities didn’t display the impact.”

Following this account, other users were also found sharing the homogenous claims.

Fact Check

Upon investigation, the claim was found to be false. A review of media reports revealed that the DRDO successfully test-fired India’s first long-range Hypersonic Missile off the Odisha coast on November 17, 2024. This marks a significant step towards enhancing the military’s capabilities with advanced weapon systems.

According to a Business Standard report, ” India has taken a significant step towards developing its own hypersonic missile that could rival China’s ‘carrier killer’ DF-21D, a weapon designed to target and destroy warships with precision. The successful test of India’s first long-range hypersonic missile on Saturday signals its intent to strengthen its naval and strategic capabilities, placing it among a select group of nations — including China, Russia, and the US — that have achieved such technological advancements.”

Additionally, we checked the official X accounts of DRDO_India and India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Both announced the successful flight trial of the long-range hypersonic missile from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the coast of Odisha.

Neither any media report nor any official source reported any casualties during the testing of the missiles in Odisha.

Conclusion

Thus from the fact check, it is clear that the viral claim of Failure of India’s hypersonic missile test and casualties is false.
