Fact Check: Viral Claim of China Capturing 14 Indian Soldiers is Fake

A viral post is being shared with a claim that China recently captured 14 Indian soldiers for “violating its territorial integrity.” While sharing this viral post, social media users have also shared pictures of Indian and chinese soldiers.

A Pakistan Based account named Ironclad wrote,” Just in, China says it captured 14 Indian soldiers violating its territorial integrity.”

Following this, multiple accounts shared the similar news with homogeneous images.

Fact Check

DFRAC Team investigated the viral claim using a Keyword search on Google. No media reports were found claiming any recent clashes between Indian and Chinese forces at the Indo-Sino Border.

Additionally, we checked for the images shared along with the viral claim. The photos were found in a report dated 17 May 2024 published by The Sun. It stated, ” HAND TO HAND COMBAT Shock new vid shows India and China’s medieval-style border clash with troops using sticks & rocks batter each other”

The report further stated, “In the dramatic video, which dates back to 2021, soldiers from both countries can be seen engaging in melee attacks and resorting to primitive weapons to fight for strategic positions alongside the border area.

The fight broke out in Galwan Valley of India’s northeastern Himalayan state of Arunachal Pradesh – part of which is wrongfully claimed by China”

Conclusion

The claim that China recently captured 14 Indian soldiers is fake and lacks any recent evidence. The images associated with this claim are from the 2020 Sino-India border clashes in the Galwan Valley, not from any recent incidents.
