An image showing a lady holding a child under rubble is doing rounds on Social media platform X(formerly Twitter). Users are sharing this image and claiming that the image depicts victims of the Israel-Hamas War

An account with name Sulaiman Ahmed shared this image and wrote: “She tried her best to protect her child Israel is a terrorist state”

Fact-check

In the probe, the DFRAC team found that the image was from Aug 29, 2024. It depicted a mother and child who were killed during flash floods in the Mahlan district of Al-Mahwit Governorate in Yemen

We reverse-searched this image using Google Lens which led us to some reports from Aug 2024, carrying a similar image. According to reports, a painful scene of a Yemeni mother hugging her child was found under the rubble, after being swept away by recent torrential rains. Residents found the woman hugging a child in a hole, buried in water and rubble, in the Malhan District of Al Mahwit Governorate in Yemen

Malhan District witnessed major rock collapses & torrential floods that claimed the lives of 38 citizens whose bodies were found, while others remain missing until now, according to the announcement of the local authorities there.

Conclusion

It is evident from DFRAC’s fact-check that the viral image is unrelated to the Israel-Hamas War. Originally, it shows a Yemeni mother and child who had been killed during flash floods in the Mahlan district of Al-Mahwit Governorate in Yemen
