A viral claim on social media surrounding Kanyar, srinagar has been shared widely on internet. A user named Echos (@echoes_vales) has shared a video on its X handle. The video shows thick black smoke rising from a distant house. While sharing the video, the user has claimed,” Indian authorities are burning civilian property in Indian occupied Kashmir. A house built from hard earned money collected by penny can be destroyed without a second thought by indian authorities.”
Fact Check
We investigated the viral claim by putting keyframes of the video into Google Reverse Image Search. On investigation we found a screenshot of the video in a report by Times Kerala, dated 2 Nov, 2024. It reported ,”Security forces bust terrorist hideouts in Khanyar, Srinagar; Video The army destroyed a terrorist hideout”. (Translated into English).
Furthemore, the similar video was also found on Youtube Channel Kashmir Images with the description, “Top LeT Commander Usman Bhai Killed in Khanyar Encounter Four Security Personnel Injured”
Using these clues, we looked into the news. According to a report by Business Standard dated 2 November, 2024 it mentioned, ” An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Srinagar’s Khanyar area of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Saturday.”
Additionaly Kashmir police zone and Chinar Corps, Indian Army both posted on X about the Khanyar, Srinagr Terrorist Encounter. “A cordon and search operation in Khanyar area of district Srinagar has resulted in an exchange of fire. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police posted on X.
“On 01 November 2024 late evening, suspicious movement was spotted, in gen area Panar of Bandipora, by alert troops. On being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate fire and escaped into the jungle. Search Operation underway,” Chinar Corps, Indian Army posted on X.
Conclusion
The claim that Indian authorities are burning civilian property in Kashmir is false. Additionally, reports confirm the damage occurred during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Srinagar’s Khanyar area.
