On social media, an image of explosion has gone viral. While sharing this image users claim that “BREAKING NEWS: Israel is currently attacking Iran in what officially starts a regional war.”
Moreover, several users shared this video and made similar claims. The link can be seen here, here and here
Fact Check
During the investigation, DFRAC found that the claim was false. We found multiple media reports regarding this image. According to ‘theglobalandmail’ report published on 2 June, 2021 “A massive fire broke out at the oil refinery serving Iran’s capital, sending thick plumes of black smoke over Tehran. It wasn’t immediately clear if there were injuries.”
Furthermore, we also found a report from ‘TimesofIsrael’ published on 3 June, 2021 stating “A massive fire that broke out at an oil refinery near Iran’s capital and sent a huge plume of black smoke into the sky over Tehran has been extinguished after more than 20 hours, a news agency reports.”
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that the viral image dates back to 2021, not from Israel attack Iran. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
