Fact Check: Video from Bangladesh candle light march falsely linked with West Bengal protest

A video of a massive crowd holding a candlelight march on social media has gone viral. While sharing the video users claim that “History has been created! The people of entire Kolkata took to the streets today. It is impossible to stop this movement until Tilottama gets justice #RGKarProtest”.

During the investigation, DFRAC found a similar video on Facebook page named Tamzid Islam Zihan posted on 9 August 2024 with Caption ‘Candlelight vigil Uttara’. Basically, Uttara is a neighbourhood of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Furthermore, we also found a video on YouTube Channel of ANICUR ROHOMAN M uploaded on 11 August 2024 titled “In memory of the martyrs of the 24th, candle lighting in Uttara today! We will not forget you”.

Conclusion

It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that the viral video is from Uttara, Bangladesh in memory of the martyrs not from West Bengal RGKarProtest. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
