On social media, an image of a Temple submerged in water has gone viral. While sharing the image users claim that “India opened their Dams, created floods. A mandir in Bangladesh is now under water”.
Fact Check
During the investigation, DFRAC found multiple media reports regarding this temple. According to report published by ‘The Hindu’ on 24 Aug 2019 “The Kapil Muni temple on Sagar Island in the Sunderbans, where a large number of devotees gather every year during the Gangasagar fair, is facing the threat of rising seas and will be submerged in the next few years”.
Furthermore, we also found a report from ‘DownToEarth’ published on 11 Sep 2019 stating “Due to rising water level, land has been eroded and if erosion continues like this, then very soon Kapilmuni temple will also be submerged in water”.
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that the image of Temple shared by users is not from Bangladesh. It’s a temple from West Bengal which is seen submerged in water due to rising seas and climate change affects in Sunderban region. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
