After Sheikh Hasina’s sudden exit amid deadly student protest in Bangladesh, the trend of misinformation has escalated on social media platforms. We have also stumbled upon one such claim made by pak handle asserting that Bangladesh strongly demanded Sheikh Hasina’s Extradition from India
Psywar Bureau, better known for spreading misinformation against India on X, posted a collage of Bangladesh’s deposed PM Hasina and the interim PM Muhammad Yunus and claimed that Bangladesh strongly demanded Sheikh Hasina’s Extradition from India.
Fact-Check
To investigate the above shared claim, DFRAC conducted a keyword search in this regard and found that no such reports have been published citing that Bangladesh interim Govt. of Muhammad Yunus who is currently handling the crisis of the country, has asked India to extradite Hasina who has taken refuge in India amid mass protests in the nation over a job quota bill.
However, Latest reports from TOI, India Today and National News stated that Bangladesh’s main opposition party BNP on Tuesday, Aug 20, urged India to extradite deposed PM Sheikh Hasina to face trial in murder and other cases registered against her since she took flight on August 5 in the face of a student-led uprising.
Furthermore, we found a report by Aajtak from Aug 23 mentioning that “on the question related to the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said that this is still a hypothetical question and at present no decision has been taken on it”.
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s Fact-Check that the BNP, the main opposition party in Bangladesh has asked India to extradite Sheikh Hasina to face trial for alleged crimes amid deadly protests in Bangladesh, not the official government of Bangladesh
