News from 2023 Raksha Bandhan falsely shared as recent Raksha Bandhan

On social media, news is going viral from Raipur, Chhattisgarh. While sharing the news, users claim that “Two sisters returning after tying Rakhi were gang r@ped by 10 people in Raipur. Main accused, Poonam Thakur, son of BJP leader, was caught”.

On investigation, DFRAC found that this news dates back to 2023. We found many media reports regarding this news. According to the Hindustan Times’ report, published on 2 Sept 2023 “Two sisters – one of them a minor – were gang-r@ped by ten men in the Raipur district of Chhattisgarh, police said, adding that all the accused, including the son of a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, were arrested on Friday”.

Furthermore, we also found a report from News 18 Chhattisgarh stating, “There is news from Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, which puts humanity to shame. Here on 30th August, i.e.,, Raksha Bandhan, ten accused r@ped two real sisters.

Conclusion

It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that this news dates back to 2023 not from the 2024 Raksha Bandhan. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
