The state turned UT has been witnessing a surge in terror attacks in the past couple of weeks. Amid this, misinformation is on the rise on the Internet. Recently, we came across some Pak-based handles who took to the social media platform X(formerly Twitter) and claimed that the act of renaming 45 schools and roads in Jammu and Kashmir by Indian authorities is yet another attempt to erase the region’s Muslim identity.
An account with the username @jabeen__6686 posted an image on X and wrote: ”The renaming of 45 schools and roads in IIOJK by Indian authorities is yet another attempt to erase the region’s Muslim identity”
Another account named Silly tweets shared the same image and made a similar claim
Fact-Check
To verify the authenticity of this claim, the DFRAC team searched some keywords on Google in this regard. We found some latest reports by The Kashmiriyat & State Times from August 6, 2024. As per The Kashmiriyat’s report, this initiative is aimed at recognizing the sacrifices of government. force personnel & celebrate the contributions of distinguished individuals. This move will instill a sense of national pride and historical awareness among the citizens.
Whereas, the report by State Times featured a document that mentioned the renaming of infrastructure/assets after the following martyrs/eminent personalities with the title: “J&K Govt renames 48 Govt schools, roads after martyrs, eminent personalities”
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s fact-check that the act of renaming schools & roads in J &K is not an attempt to erase Muslim’s Identity but to honor government forces personnel and eminent personalities.
