On August 12, 2024, a user Mrgunsngear on the social media platform X shared a video showing a drone attack. The post, which garnered over 132,200 views, claimed that Northern Israel was being targeted by Hezbollah rockets, some of which were allegedly bypassing the Iron Dome defense system. The user also stated that in response to this attack, the United States had expedited the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and the USS Georgia submarine to the region, supplementing the support already provided by the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group.
Users can be seen making similar kind of claims.
Fact Check
A thorough investigation conducted by DFRAC into the video in question has uncovered conflicting information. We found various reliable media sources and reports issued by TheMercury, Voice of America, and Zawya, where it was revealed that the footage does not depict a recent 2024 Hezbollah attack on Israel but rather the video dates back to 2023 and shows a Russian aerial assault on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials reported that this attack, considered the most significant since spring, tragically resulted in at least two fatalities. Debris from intercepted missiles fell on buildings, a park, and a school.
Conclusion
DFRAC debunked the the claim and now it is clear that the video which showed a recent Hezbollah rocket attack on Northern Israel prompted US naval deployment was misleading because the video is from a 2023 Russian airstrike on Kyiv, unrelated to the claimed Israel-Hezbollah conflict. Hence the video is misleading.
