Old video of men's relay falsely shared by several users including Kiran Bedi and Anupam Kher amid the Paris Olympics 2024

Olympics 2024 started in Paris on Friday and will continue until August 11. Around ten and a half thousand players from 206 countries of the world are participating in this event. Meanwhile, a video of the men’s relay is going viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Users are sharing this video & claiming it to be from the  Paris 2024olympics .

Bollywood Actor Anupam Kher shared this video on X handle and wrote: “India in the finals! Jai Hind!”

Apart from this, Retired IPS Kiran Bedi also shared this video and claimed: “India makes it to finals. Have a look. #OlympicsGames”

Fact-Check

To investigate the authenticity of the viral video, the DFRAC team converted this video into some keyframes and reverse-searched them on google. We found this video on the facebook page of TMC leader Derek O’Brien with the date August 27, 2023. The video’s caption read: “What a glorious moment for Indian sport. If there’s one video you must watch today, it’s this. The disbelief in the commentators voice at 2.28”

He posted this video when Indian players Rajesh Ramesh, Mohammad Ajmal, Amos Jacob and Mohammad Anas Yahiya broke the Asian record in the 1600 meter men’s relay and qualified for the World Championship final with 2 minutes 59.05 seconds.

Besides this, actor Anupam Kher himself posted the viral video on his Instagram on 27 August 2023 when Indian players qualified for the finals of the 1600m men’s relay

Following this, we also found reports from The Hindu and Indian Express mentioning all the details of this game

Conclusion

It is clear from DFRAC’s fact-check that the viral video is from the World Athletics Championships 2023, held in Budapest, not from the Paris Olympics 2024. The video was related to the event when Indian men’s 4x400m relay team shattered Asian record in a stunning race, clocking 2 minutes 59.05 seconds to qualify for its maiden final round of the World Championships, Budapest.
