The DFRAC team investigated the image in question and came across various media reports from The New York Times and Lawfare.
It has been found that the image shared on social media does not show Trump receiving a “red folder” before announcing a vice president. In reality, this is a picture of Trump leaving a courthouse after filing his declaration of candidacy in New Hampshire. This event is related to a legal challenge by Colorado voters who argue that Trump is disqualified from holding office under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars from office anyone who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the Constitution after having taken an oath to support it.
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s fact-check that the social media post is misleading. It misrepresents a photo of a routine campaign filing event, adding false claims about its context and significance.
