Fact-Check

The DFRAC team investigated the viral video by converting it into some keyframes and reverse-searched them on Google. We found a found a video report by The Guradian on YouTube,  showcasing similar visuals from the above viral video. The report was published in 2021 with the title: “Sri Lanka faces environmental disaster as cargo ship burns for days” further mentioning that footage showed a Singapore-registered ship cargo ship MV X-Press Pearl caught fire. The Sri Lankan navy and Indian coastguard have been trying to reduce the flames for more than 10 days.

Additionally, a report from NDTV also stated published in May 2021 also stated similar facts relating to the above viral video.

Whereas Hindustan Times’s report dated May 30,2021 cited that the Indian Coast Guard said that three of its ships continued with firefighting operations onboard the massive container ship MV X-Press Pearl on Sunday. The MV X-Press Pearl has been smouldering on the horizon for the last 11 days after a blaze broke out as it was heading to Colombo from Gujarat
